EXECUTIVE SUMMARY

Start with the business decision, then select the measure. ROI, ROAS, sales lift and lower media costs answer different questions. These examples show approaches worth testing; their percentages cannot be ranked as if they used the same market, denominator or method.

MEASUREMENT / A WORKED EXAMPLE

Revenue is a start.
Profit makes the decision.

ROAS

Attributed advertising revenue ÷ advertising spend.

Incremental ROAS

Additional revenue caused by the activity ÷ advertising spend.

Project ROI

(Incremental contribution before project cost − total project investment) ÷ total project investment.

Illustrative calculation — not a client result

Assume €100,000 incremental sales and €70,000 associated product, fulfilment and other variable costs. Contribution before the project investment is €30,000. With a €20,000 total project investment, net incremental profit is €10,000 and project ROI is 50%.

All figures are invented solely to explain the calculation. A real evaluation must agree attribution, returns, discounts, taxes, time horizon and every relevant cost.
